Herbert E. Gourley, 77, of 1635 Drexel Ave., died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, with his family by his side.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 15, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Allen and Genevieve (Dolan) Gourley.

He served during World War II in the European Theater and fought in four major campaigns, and the Battle of the Bulge.

He married the love of his life, Irene Hermanson, on May 23, 1949, at St. Raphael's Cathedral; she died on April 2, 2003. They are happily joined once again in heaven dancing to their favorite song, "Red Roses for a Blue Lady."

Herb graduated from school with honors and attended barber college in Cedar Rapids. He was a skilled barber in Dubuque for 53 years and was a member of the Certified Barber's Union for 48 years. Herb freely gave political and medical advice to his friends and loyal customers.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was dearly loved by his family.

Surviving are three daughters, Beverly Gourley, of Erie, Colo., Genevieve Gourley, of Dubuque, and Lou Ann (Jim) Hoerner, of Zwingle, Iowa; a very special grandson, Jason Northouse; a brother, William (Peggy) Gourley, of San Jacinto, Calif.; a half brother, Donald (Helen) Gourley, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Nancy Gourley, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve; his father, Allen, Sr.; a brother, Allen, Jr.; two sisters, Sister Mary Allen, BVM, and Anna Mae Hoffmann; and five half brothers.

A Herbert E. Gourley Memorial Fund has been established.
