Deceased Name: Kenneth L. Norpel

Kenneth L. Norpel, 88, of 3693 Welu Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Ennoble Manor Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

He was born on May 31, 1916, in Bellevue, Iowa, son of Floyd and Latricia "Letty" (Lundin) Norpel. He married Mary Alice McCoy on June 14, 1941, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Menominee, Wis.

He graduated from Bellevue High School and attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a Petty Officer 1st Class in the Sea Bees. During combat in Okinawa, he received several medals and a Purple Heart.

Mr. Norpel worked at the proving grounds in Savanna, Ill., and at John Deere Dubuque Works until he moved to Bellevue. He owned and operated Norpel's T.V. and Radio Store in Bellevue for 21 years. He brought the first television cable to Bellevue. He was justice of the peace for many years in Dubuque and Bellevue. He also was a notary public.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and was a scout for the team in 1934.

He was a Ham radio operator for 45 years. His call letters were W0BCN.

He raised rabbits and was a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association. He also enjoyed playing golf and grew gladiolas in his flower garden.

He was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, the Ham Radio Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Alice; a daughter, Judy (Dennis) Radford, of Dubuque; four sons, Kenneth (Rhonda) Norpel Jr. and Craig M. Norpel, both of Dubuque, and James L. (Alice) Norpel and Jeffrey J. (Sarah) Norpel, both of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Carl Norpel, of Mount Carroll, Ill.; two sisters, Alice Vick, of Houston, and Janet (John) McLean; 23 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jean Michels; and a sister Arlene Norpel.
