Deceased Name: Janaan M. Norpel

BELLEVUE, Iowa - Janaan Mae (Lewis) Norpel, 78, of 1205 Mulberry St., Bellevue, died Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2002, at home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Mrs. Norpel had worked at the Licorice Factory, the Battery Factory and the former Dubuque Packing Co., all in Dubuque. She later was co-owner of Norpel's Market, the Riverview Hotel and Cafe, and the Fashion Shop, all in Bellevue.

She was born on March 21, 1923, in Asbury, daughter of Earl and Gertrude (Ehrlich) Lewis. She married Richard J. Norpel Sr. on Feb. 23, 1943, in New Albany, Ind.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Rosary Society and the Bellevue American Legion Auxiliary. She had been assistant leader of 4-H of Bellevue, the Democratic precinct committee woman for the city of Bellevue and Democratic Vice-Chairman for Jackson County.

She enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting and playing cards. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Richard J. Norpel Sr.; three sons, Charles, of Dubuque, and Richard Jr. (Diane) and Stephen (Elizabeth), of Bellevue; three daughters, Mary, of Dubuque, Suzanne (Charlie) Fondell, of Bellevue, and Laura, of North Liberty; 14 grandchildren, Robinn, Bryan, Troy, Sarah, Heather, Jamie, Gracie, Jill, Dick, Josh, Ronda, Jessalyn, Chloe and Hayley Jo; seven great-grandchildren, Addison, Ayden, Elliot, Lexi, Alyssa, Hannah and Jackson; and two sisters, Florence (Bill) Cummings and Myrl Breitbach, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sidney, Harold and her twin, George Lewis; and a special niece, Patty (Lewis) Oneyear.

In lieu of flowers, a Janaan Norpel Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Kukla, Mary Kay and staff, Dr. Garland, Carol and staff and Hospice of Dubuque.
