Dubuque father, son die when truck hits bridge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) --- A Dubuque man and his father died Tuesday when their semi-tractor trailer truck struck a bridge abutment and burst into flames.

The victims were identified as Randy Avenarius, 32, and his father Roland, 58, both of 2985 University Ave.

According to Missouri state troopers, Randy Avenarius was driving south on Interstate 35 north of Kansas City when he apparently fell asleep about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The truck, which was hauling building materials, struck a bridge guard rail before slamming head-on into the abutment.

The truck exploded and burned on impact and both men died in the cab, authorities said.

Troopers said the truck struck the bridge pier with such force that the twin concrete supports were knocked away. The steel bridge sagged noticeably after the impact, but a highway official said it is not in danger of collapsing.

Authorities said no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
