George J. Pfeiler

George J. Pfeiler, 63, of 3150 Kennedy Road, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services, surrounded by his loving family after a 13 year courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with burial in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Centralia, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a scripture wake service at 4:30 p.m.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1939, in Epworth, Iowa, son of Ray and Bernice (Habel) Pfeiler. He married Rose Hoeger on Dec. 27, 1962, at the St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa.

He attended Loras College and received his bachelor of arts in business administration in 1961. George owned and operated the family farm in Centralia until 1991. After selling the farm, George began working at Theisen's Home, Farm and Auto Store and spent 12 years there as a sales associate.

George was a volunteer for the Centralia Fire Department for 28 years as a first responder and was a past assistant fire chief for the department. He was a very active, longtime member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

George was a man who found his greatest joy in his family, friends and his faith in the Lord. George will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him throughout his 63 years with us.

Surviving are his parents, Ray and Bernice Pfeiler, of Dubuque; his wife, Rose (Hoeger) Pfeiler, of Dubuque; a son, Michael (fiance Catherine McCullough) Pfeiler, of Evanston, Ill.; four daughters, Lisa (Thomas) Powers, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Sharon (Mark) Schmidt, Elaine (Jerad) Schemmel and Jane (Mike) Kaesbauer, all of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Don (Karen) Pfeiler, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, MaryAnn (Bill) Kleis, of Rochester, Minn., and Kathy (Denis) Wagner, of Dubuque; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Bonnie) Hoeger, of Dyersville, and Jim (Diane) Hoeger, of Acworth, Ga., three sisters-in-law, Rita Ameskamp, of Farley, Germaine (Art) Helle, of Greeley, Iowa, and Norma Hoeger, of Franklin, Wis.; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Gregor and Theckla Hoeger; a sister-in-law, Mary Hoeger; and a brother-in-law, Al Ameskamp.

A George J. Pfeiler Memorial Fund has been established.
