Adele M. O'Brien

Adele M. O'Brien, 92, of 2655 Asbury Road, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center - Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at The Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends many call after 9 a.m. today at the church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Sept. 21, 1915, in Dubuque, daughter of Theodore and Vina (Giesen) Hesling. She married Byrne A. O'Brien on Oct. 5, 1939, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1971.

Adele was the personal secretary to four Archbishops of Dubuque, Archbishop Henry P. Rohlman, Archbishop Leo Binz, Archbishop James J. Byrne and Archbishop Daniel W. Kucera.

She was awarded the Benemerenti medal, when Archbishop Binz petitioned the Holy Father in 1957, in appreciation for her loyal service.

She was a member of Nativity Parish and its Rosary Society and Guild.

Adele also belonged to the Dubuque Serra Club, Catholic Daughters of America Court 351, Our Lady of Victory, the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, American Legion Auxiliary, Dubuque County Historical Society and a former member of the Aces Bowling League.

Surviving are two nieces, Holly Hearity, of Lemont, Ill., and Judeanne Whinery, of Amarillo, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Lois O'Brien and Donna O'Brien, both of Dubuque, and Helen O'Brien, of Waterloo, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, John Gregory, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Hesling.
