Urban J. Jaeger

HOPKINTON, Iowa -- Urban J. Jaeger, 87, of Hopkinton, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 6 p.m. and an Altar Society rosary at 8 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was born on April 1, 1923, in Dyersville, son of Sylverius and Angela (Kramer) Jaeger. He helped on the family farm as a child, and he served in Europe during World War II, from 1944 to 1946.

He married Irene Petsche on Aug. 23, 1947, in Guttenberg.

Urban was an independent trucker until 1960, and then was a self-employed construction worker. Urban and Irene began farming in 1965, northeast of Hopkinton. Farming was an occupation he enjoyed until his accident nearly two weeks ago. He designed and built the first end loader in the area, which he used to dig many basements, including the basement of St. Francis Xavier Basilica.

Surviving are his wife, Irene; children, Russell (Pat) Jaeger and Sue (Jim) Guthrie, both of Hopkinton, and Eldon (Barb) Jaeger, of Worthington; seven grandchildren, Angela, David, Sharon and J. Russel Guthrie, Rodney, Kathy and Brenda Jaeger; 12 great-grandchildren; six siblings, Joan Helle, of Dubuque, Norma (Laverne) Petsche, of Dyersville, Della Rose Downey, of Marietta, Ga., Eileen Appel, of Houston, William (Mary Ann) Jaeger and John (Ruth) Jaeger, both of Manchester; four half siblings, Leo (Diane) Jaeger, of Kenton, Ohio, Leroy Jaeger, of Earlville, Loras (Mikki) Jaeger, of Bettendorf, and Marilyn (Pat) Werner, of Dyersville; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Blunk, of Garnavillo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Coletta Pottebaum Jaeger; and two siblings in infancy, Jeanne Ann and Eldon Jaeger.
