PEOSTA, Iowa - Justin "Jess" McCarthy, 81, of 14911 Monastery Road, Peosta, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn, Rev. Dieter Xavier, OCSO, and Rev. Carl Manternach officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 528 of Cascade. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where there will be a special prayer service at 4 p.m.
Mr. McCarthy worked as an expert machinist at Ridge Motor Co. for 40 years until he retired.
He was born May 10, 1921, in Bernard, Iowa, son of John and Mary Ann (Malony) McCarthy.
He graduated from Peosta High School as valedictorian of his class. He then entered the military and served with the Army in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946.
He married Ethel Jones, of South Wales, UK, on Feb. 26, 1945. They raised four daughters together.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, American Legion Post 528 of Cascade and Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Platteville, Wis. Justin was a pheasant hunter, golfer and an avid sports fan, especially of the Hawkeyes and Cubs.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel; three daughters, Chris Rahn (Jim Corcoran) and Debby (Dale) Andersen, both of Atlanta, Ga., and Mollie McCarthy, of Morrison, Colo.; five grandchildren, Tracy Parkins, Tom Kubik, Julie (Bobbie) Crawley and David Rahn, all of Atlanta, and Robbie (Christy) Rahn, of Corona, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Brandon Crawley, of Atlanta;. his sisters, Mary Miller, of Dubuque, Marge (Phil) McDonald and Eleanor Burds, both of Peosta, and Geraldine McCarthy, of Bernard; and two sisters-in-law, Loretta McCarthy and Donna Kutsch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathleen Kubik; and his brothers, John, Jimmy and Ralph McCarthy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
The McCarthy family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque for all their wonderful care, love and support they gave to Justin and his family.
