Louisa J. Herman, 80, of Dubuque, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Heritage Manor, Dubuque, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Dubuque, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

She was born on April 23, 1922, in rural Dundee, Iowa, daughter of Carl and Marvelle (Sturm) Vierow. She married Lawrence J. Herman on Nov. 29, 1941, at Lutheran Parsonage, Manchester; he died on June 26, 1955.

She was a 1940 graduate of Lamont High School. She was a homemaker during her first years of marriage. She later worked as a sales associate at JCPenney in Dubuque, from September 1955, until her retirement in July 1986, after 31 years. She enjoyed many friendships at work that she maintained even after retirement.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Dubuque, belonged to the Ruth Circle, and quilted with the "Cover Girls" making quilts for missions. She was a member of the Finley Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, visiting with friends and spending time with her family.

Surviving are a son, Frederick Herman, of Dubuque; two grandchildren, Colleen Herman, of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Douglas (Leann) Herman, of Monticello, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Sydney, Sawyer and Caleb Herman, all of Monticello; a sister, Roberta Warner, of Oelwein, Iowa; two brothers, Earl (Madalyn) Vierow, of Waverly, Iowa, and Clifford (Janice) Vierow, of Oelwein; a brother-in-law, Henry Herman, of Marion, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Irma Herman and Norman Herman, both of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Harold Vierow.

A Louisa J. Herman Memorial Fund has been established.

Louisa's family wishes to thank Dr. William Dall and his staff, the staff at Heritage Manor and Marge Bennett of Hospice of Dubuque for all their wonderful care and support.
