Martha Jane Jamison, 77, of 1650 Koehler Drive NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at The Woodlands of the Meth Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, after a long struggle with multiple myeloma.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Christ Church Presbyterian, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Karen Beals and the Rev. Rose Taul officiating. The Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is in charge of arrangements.

Best known as Jane, the daughter of William and Ruth Etters, she was born on Aug. 28, 1925, in Harrisburg, Pa. Her childhood was noted for the love of outdoor life. She was active in the Girl Scouts and hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail.

A 1943 graduate of Harrisburg's William Penn High School, she attended the University of Michigan and became a geology major, which required field experiences in Wyoming's Teton mountains and an internship in the Pennsylvania State Geology office. In 1945, she transferred to the University of Southern California and was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and majored in social studies. In 1947, she received her bachelor of arts degree.

At USC, she met William G. Jamison and they were married at Camp Hill, Pa., on Aug. 9, 1947. The couple lived in State College, Pa.; San Diego; Boulder, Colo.; and lived many years in Dubuque County. On her husband's sabbatical leaves from the University of Dubuque, they lived in New Zealand and Fiji.

Jane's professional career included: teacher at the former Visitation Academy, Dubuque; Dean of Women, Pacific Theological College, Fiji; director, Dubuque Human Rights Commission; teacher's aide at Vinton Braille and Sightsaving School; investigator for the Waterloo Human Rights Commission; matron at the Dubuque County Jail; and Child Protective Service Worker, Iowa Department of Human Services. Her volunteer services included Hospice of Dubuque and Dubuque Battered Women's Shelter.

She was a lifetime member of the NAACP, active in Amnesty International, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Sierra Club and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. William G. Jamison; a daughter, Sally (Jeff) Brown and daughters, Heather, Holly and Nicole, of Vinton, Iowa; three sons, John (Donna) Jamison, of Bernard, Iowa, William (Alaine) Jamison and their two daughters, Tressa and Rachel, of Bernard, and James (Betty) Jamison and their daughters, Jennifer and Christine, of Aurora, Ohio.
