Zanta L. Miller, 84, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, March 21, 2003, in San Jose.

Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1918, in Elkport, Iowa, daughter of Chauncey W. and Mildred (Hannemann) Bateman. She married Carroll F. "Cuggy" Miller on April 17, 1936; he died on Jan. 27, 1984.

She worked in the lab at Sungarden Cannery, San Jose. She was a wonderful and loving mother of 12, grandmother of 28, great-grandmother of 34 and the great-great-grandmother of one.

She was a member of the 1918 Club and TOPS. She had pen pals all over the U.S. and she spent many hours writing letters, mailing them with lots of stickers. She enjoyed her many trips to Reno and Lake Tahoe to play the slot machines.

Surviving are five sons, Karl (Joyce), of Dubuque, Tommy, of Gustine, Calif., Terry (Judy), of San Jose, Dale (Judy), of Lacy, Wash., and Mark, of Salem, Ore.; three daughters, Janet (Ken) Huff, of San Jose, Donna (Ron) Cornelius, of Santa Clara, Calif., and Karlene (Larry) Mohlenpage, of Fremont, Calif.; two brothers, Clyde H. Bateman and Jimmy D. (Laura) Bateman, both of Dubuque; and several nieces, nephews and friends in the Dubuque area.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Billie in infancy, and Teddy; two daughters, Nancy L. Matis and Joanne Tawney; two sisters, Janet Jean Bateman in infancy, and June Cottrell; and a brother, Gerald Bateman.
