Mariet E. Schmitt, 87, of 12821 Sherrill Road, Dubuque, formerly of Farley, Iowa, died peacefully in her sleep at 7:51 a.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a St. Joseph's Parish Rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake service at 5:30 p.m.

She was born on July 22, 1915, in Farley, daughter of Peter and Katherine (Arlen) Boffeli. She received her education in the Farley area schools.

She married Peter J. Schmitt on July 22, 1942, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. The couple lived in Farley their entire lives.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Farley, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Mariet was a homemaker and enjoyed helping her family. Gardening and embroidering were her special hobbies.

Surviving are a daughter, Margie (Jim) Benn, of Dubuque; a son, James (special friend, Gwen Benn) Schmitt, of Dyersville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Kim (Bruce) McMurrin, of Delhi, Iowa, Kristi Benn, of Dubuque, Karla (Eric) Murphy, of Clinton, Iowa, Jeff (Pam) Schmitt and Amy (Terry) Recker, both of Dyersville, and Jason (Susan) Jacobs, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Emily, McKenzie, Aaron, Samantha, Lucas and Cameron; three sisters, Pearl (Victor) Schaul, of Manchester, Iowa, Delia (Wesley) Truair, of Denver, Colo., and Rosene (Dolphin) (LeRoy) Trumm, of Cascade, Iowa; two brothers, Eldon "Pete" (Odie) Boffeli, of Cascade, and Eugene (Maxine) Boffeli, of Monticello, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Boffeli, of Manchester, and Lois Boffeli, of Farley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter Schmitt, on Jan. 7, 1975; a daughter, Norma Jean Schmitt, on Oct. 27, 1975; four brothers, Merlin, Allan, Bill and LaVern; three sisters, Cecelia McAllister, Sr. Mary Raynel Boffeli and Marcella Boffeli in infancy; and nieces and nephews.

Mariet's family would like to thank the staff at the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center for all the wonderful care they gave to Mariet.
