HOLY CROSS, Iowa - Mrs. Bernice S. Maiers, 77, of Holy Cross, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at home, after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Maiers worked at the Holy Cross School as a substitute cook and in house keeping.

She was born on June 16, 1925, in Luxemburg, daughter of Joseph and Elenora (Maiers) Gaul.

She married Vincent Maiers on Feb. 19, 1946, in Luxemburg. They farmed in the Holy Cross area until retirement in 1980.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and its Rosary Society.

She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors and was very devoted to her family and grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Vincent; six sons, Ronald (Therese), James, Gary and Mark Maiers, all of Holy Cross, Dennis (Patty) Maiers, of West Des Moines, and Dale (Joan) Maiers, of Duluth, Minn.; a daughter, Joyce Bettcher, of Farley; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Leon (Jean) Gaul, of Dubuque; and three sisters, Julia (Bill) Welter, of Dubuque, Mildred (Louis) Recker, of Holy Cross, and Sister Mary Ann Gaul, of La Crosse, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elenora Gaul; and a brother, Alvin Gaul.

The family would like to extend a thank-you to Dr. Laurie Garms, Dr. Brian Sullivan and a special thanks to Hospice for their excellent care.
