William J. Condon

Telegraph Herald - Monday, March 24, 2003

William J. Condon, 80, of Des Moines, formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Hospice Kavanaugh House, Des Moines.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Des Moines. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines, where there will be a memorial service at 7 p.m.

He was born on April 10, 1922, in Jeffer-son, where he grew up with his brothers, Cy and Jim, and his sister, Eloise.

During World War II, his National Guard unit was mobilized, eventually participating in the invasion of North Africa. He was among those who were captured in this action and spent the rest of the war in German prison camps. When he returned home in 1945, his family had moved to Des Moines, where he met and married his wife, Marilynn Sauve-Morgan in 1947.

He began his career with Bruce Motor Freight in 1949, and was their traffic manager until 1972, when he moved to Dubuque to become vice president of traffic for H&W Motor Express. He retired in 1995.

Surviving are his wife, Marilynn; a son, Mike, his wife, Mickey, and daughter, Carly, a son, Rick, his wife Jenny, and daughters, Janelle and Janet, a daughter, Lori Condon Grant, her husband, Randy, daughter, Katie, and son, Jonathan, and a son, Bill, and his wife Patty, all of Des Moines. Also surviving are a sister, Eloise (Ron) Ness, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Norma Condon, of Culver City, Calif.; cousins, Janet (Bill) Lawson, of Urbandale, and Mary Jane (Bill) Koehler, of Kansas City; and nine nieces and nephews.

All who know Bill will always remember "the smile." To help spread that smile, contributions to Hospice of Central Iowa and the Disabled American Veterans would be most welcome.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the friends and neighbors who helped us make the urgent move back to Des Moines after 30 years in Dubuque. We could never have done it without you! We also want to thank Dr. John Whalen and the staff of The Finley Hospital and the Wendt Regional Cancer Center in Dubuque for all their care and concern - most recently, but certainly not last, Becky and Karen, of Hospice, and the staff at Kavanaugh House. God bless you all!
