David D. "Red" Burds, 77, of 280 West 17th St., died Friday March 21, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John's Baptist Church Cemetery, Centralia, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Burds farmed in the Potosi, Wis., and Peosta, Iowa, area, retiring in 1984.

He was born on May 13, 1925, in Peosta, son of Martin and Louise (Breitbach) Burds.

He graduated from the Peosta (Iowa) High School.

He was a corporal in the Army with the 7th Infantry Calvary Division during the Korean War. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and two Bronze Battle Stars.

He was a member of St. Patrick Parish, Knights of Columbus and a life member of the Disabled Army Veterans Association.

Surviving are a sister, Helen (Edward) Heiberger, of Dubuque; two brothers, John "Jeff" (Alice) Burds, of Peosta, and Martin (Celeste) Burds, of Madison, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Faith (George) Somers, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lois Burds, of Dubuque; a stepson-in-law, Michael Lampe, of Dubuque; two stepgrandchildren, Jeff and Jennifer Lampe; a stepgreat-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Albert, William and Edward; a sister, Mary Lou Burds; and a stepdaughter, Susan Lampe.
