Gladys R. "Nanny" (Rice) Maxwell, 83, of 1213 Madera St., Dubuque, formerly of Toccoa, Ga., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens, Toccoa.

She was born on March 30, 1919, in Bowman, Ga., daughter of Claude and Susie (Seymour) Rice. She married Barney Maxwell in 1935; he passed away on Dec. 25, 1990.

She was a graduate of Bowman High School. She earned a Licensed Practical Nurse Degree and worked at Stephens County Hospital in Toccoa for 25 years.

She had resided in Dubuque with her daughter, Joan Dix, since 1996.

She was a member of Hill Street Baptist Church, Toccoa. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening and crafts.

Surviving are her daughter, Joan Dix, of Dubuque; a son, Dan (Elizabeth) Maxwell, of Virginia Beach, Va.; 11 grandchildren, Rachael (Michael) Tadrnicek, Rebecca (Mitchel) Terry, Lincoln (Rachel) Dix, William Dix II, Michael, Jacob, Jeff, Edward and Abigail Dix, Brooke Maxwell and Amber (Ed) Boyd; and five great-granddaughters.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James Harold Rice.

A Gladys R. Maxwell Memorial Fund has been established.
