DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Alphonse H. "Shorty" Kramer, 89, of Dyersville, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 27, 1913, in Dyersville, son of Henry I. and Mary (Stelken) Kramer.

He married Irene Lansing on Jan. 2, 1938, at St. Francis Xavier Church. They farmed northeast of Dyersville. He also worked for Jack Light/Wendling Quarries until his retirement, about 1975.

His hobbies were carpentry, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Irene; a son, David J.A. (Janice) Kramer, of Dyersville; three grandchildren, Diane (Dale) Hefel, of Farley, and Darrell Kramer (fiancee, Sally Scherrman) and Janet (Mark) Stelken, both of Dyersville; five great-grandchildren, Andy, Jenna and Madison Stelken and Danielle and Dina Hefel; two step great-grandchildren, Claire and Eva; a brother, Charles (Mary) Kramer, of Earlville; a brother-in-law, Earl Tegeler, of Dyersville; and three sisters-in-law, Bernice Lansing, of Dyersville, Mildred Kramer, of Hopkinton, and Irene Kramer, of Epworth.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude Ries, Margaret Kramer and Rosemary Tegeler; and three brothers, Clarence, Alvin and Lawrence Kramer.
