Adella "Della" Alvina Ferring, 91, of Dubuque, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Dubuque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1918, in Dubuque, the second child of Julius and Maria Anna (Kons) Naumann. She married Theodore J. Ferring in 1947; he preceded her in death in 1981.

In 1956, Della started her own restaurant, and in 1960, she opened Ted's Tap. Della and Ted owned and operated the tavern for 23 years until she retired in 1983. She also worked at Holy Family Hall until she suffered a stroke.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and volunteered at the school. She also volunteered at the Dubuque Rescue Mission. Della was an animal lover and always had one or two pets in her home. She was an active member of the Family of the Moose.

Della enjoyed reading biographies, doing word puzzles, traveling and going to lunch her friends. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughters, Joyce (Dennis) Rasmussen, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Barbara (Dan) Barrett, of Dubuque; sons, James, of Dubuque, and Michael, of Mason City, Iowa; grandchildren, Thomas and Jason Travis, Ensign Cody Gremore and Ensign Casey Gremore, who is in the Navy, and Joshua Woodward; and great-grandchildren, Aidan and Ashlynn Travis and Ivan Jacobson.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; her parents; and a sister, Florence Naumann.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque.
