Melvin J. Thomas, 65, of 2217 Queen St., Dubuque, formerly of Balltown, Iowa, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Church, Balltown, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Thomas was formerly employed at the Dubuque Packing Co. and also farmed the family farm in the Balltown area.

He was born on July 9, 1937, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of Clarence J. and Bertha A. (Jaeger) Thomas.

He was a member of The Boat Club in Dubuque. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and fishing on the Mississippi River.

Surviving are a daughter, Christine M. (Charles "Chuck") Fagen, of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, David M. Thomas and Brian J. Thomas, both of Omaha; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Matthew and Gregory Fagen; and three sisters, Arlene (Wilbur) Petsche and Betty (LeRoy) Steines, both of Dubuque, and Geraldine (Gerald) Ernzen, of Marion, Iowa.

A Melvin J. Thomas Memorial Fund has been established.
