Alvin Lloyd Kircher

Alvin Lloyd Kircher, 69, of 1884 Carter Road, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in Rochester, Minn., from complications of ALS.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the funeral home.

He was born on May 4, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Alvin John and Madelyn Catherine (Dunkley) Kircher. He married Trudy Craig on Aug. 13, 1983.

Alvin served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

He worked for Flexsteel Industries for 40 years, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of the Upholsters Union and Julien Dubuque Yacht Club.

Alvin was an avid golfer and boater, Iowa Hawkeyes fan and Chicago Cubs fan. He loved to vacation in Florida, spend time with his family and his dog, Raizin.

Surviving are his wife, Trudy; five children, Kristine (Jack) Freund, Kathy (Dwaine) Prine, Kenneth (Nancy) Kircher, Tony (Stormy Mochal) Moline, and Amy (David) Spiegelhalter, all of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret (Ron) Blaser, of Bellevue, Iowa, Shirley (Harold) Price, of Dubuque, Mary (Duane) Horton, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Nancy (Mike) Valentine, of Bellevue; a brother, Tom (Lisa) Kircher, of Brighton, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, an Alvin L. Kircher Memorial Fund has been established.

A special thanks to Alvin's son Ken, who 14 years ago gave his dad a life-saving kidney donation and to Dr. John Whalen, and his staff for making it all possible. The family also wishes to thank those who gave their support with Alvin's ALS this past three months.
