Lucille L. Frederick, 94, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Egelhof Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born on May 24, 1915, in Dubuque County, Lucille "Lu" was one of seven children of Fred and Edith Kramer, local area garden farmers. She was the last surviving member of her generation of the Kramer and Frederick families.

As a young girl, she worked with her brothers and sisters in the fields and helped to bring the produce to Dubuque's market. In 1933, she married Alfred J. Frederick and made their home near and in Durango for the next 29 years. Al worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad for more than 40 years.

In Durango, they raised eight children who thrived on life in the country. Lucille took care of the ills and spills of their children during their daily living. The family grew and canned large amounts of fruits and vegetables, harvested wild berries from their nearby patches and hosted frequent summer gatherings of friends and relatives in their spacious yard.

Her sister, Minnie, had married Roy Frederick, her husband's brother, and the two families remained particularly close during all those years. Children of both families prided themselves on their double-cousin relationship. The Fredericks moved to Dubuque in 1962, and Mr. Frederick passed away in 1975. Lucille later moved to Alverno Apartments and, since heart by-pass surgery in 1995, she has lived at Stonehill Care Center.

A member of Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ for more than 60 years, she is survived by her eight children; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Her children include four daughters, LaVonne (Gary) Latham, Kathy (Mark) Hantelmann and Rebecca Frederick, all of Dubuque, and Linda (Tom) Oberbroeckling, of Anamosa, Iowa; four sons, Glenn (Delores) Frederick, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Roger (June) Frederick, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ronald Frederick, of Guttenberg, Iowa, and Jerry (Marilyn) Frederick, of Durango, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lucille Frederick Memorial Fund.

Online condolences may be sent to obits@egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jim, for all of their loving care.
