Irwin Wagner

Irwin "Irv" Wagner, 86, of 3175 Pennsylvania Ave., formerly of Mud Lake Road, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

He was born on March 6, 1923, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of Henry and Lena (Nauman) Wagner. He married Dorothy Brewer on Aug. 12, 1948, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Irv attended Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School, in Sherrill.

He loved his country and served in the Army from October 1945 to February 1948, and he was deployed to Japan.

He farmed near Mud Lake his entire life and also worked at Peoples National Gas Co., retiring in 1979.

Irv was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a very quick wit, loved being with his family and enjoyed gathering in the morning with his coffee friends.

He was a member of Holy Ghost parish for 61 years where he was a long-time usher. He also was a volunteer at the American Cancer Society for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; his children, Sister Lynn Wagner PBVM, of Dubuque, Michele (Michael) Culbertson, of Dubuque, Bruce (Vickie) Wagner, of Cuba City, Wis.; Christine (James) Nelson, of Davenport, Iowa, Carla (C.J.) Tuthill, of Davenport, Iowa, and Donna (John) Schmidt, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Leta Wagner; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Heiring and Charles Kessler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert, Louis, Norman and Cyril; and sisters, Elenor Stecklein, Marcella Kessler, Marina Flood and Elaine Heiring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sisters of the Presentation, Holy Ghost Church and the Dubuque Food Pantry.
