Mary C. Juergens, 82, of 1548 Atlantic St., died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, l640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m.

Mrs. Juergens worked at the Dubuque Battery Factory, Stampfer's Department Store, O'Toole Office Supply, City of Dubuque, Cullen-Schlitz Engineering and John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works, retiring in 1983.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1921, in Benton, Wis., daughter of Owen and Lorena (Cross) Swift. She married Joseph J. Juergens on July 7, 1940, in Chaminaude, Mo.; he died in 1952.

She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.

She was a member of St. Mary's Parish, Catholic Daughters of America, Gold Star Mothers and American Legion Auxiliary.

She worked hard raising five children after the death of her husband. She loved her family, Dubuque, the Farmers Market and working in her flower garden.

She enjoyed working as a volunteer for the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, St. Mary's Parish Office and the Cancer Discovery Shop. She also enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Everyone called her "Maga Mary."

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne M. (Donald) Vandermillen, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; sons, Stephen J. (Suzanne) Juergens, David C. Juergens and Thomas J. Juergens, all of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren, Laura Vandermillen Johnston, of Bonita Springs, Fla., Luke J. Vandermillen, of Des Moines, Annie Vandermillen Albrecht, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Donald W. Vandermillen, Jana M. Juergens, Jennifer L. Juergens Hanniford and William "B.J." Juergens, all of Dubuque, Benjamin J. Juergens, of Seattle, Brian C. Juergens, of New York, and Gina L. Juergens, of Omaha, Neb.; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas (Carol) Swift, of Dubuque, and John (Peg) Swift, of San Diego; and sisters, Mrs. Mildred (Herbert) McClean and Mrs. Ann (John) Nauman, both of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William O. Juergens; and a sister, Virginia Hoppmann.

Memorials may be given to Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and Dubuque Boys and Girls Club.
