Friends say goodbye to siblings
Lindsay and Jordan Walker; Mother remains hospitalized; father in jail, accused in deaths

The two matching white caskets were abbreviated versions of adult coffins, reflecting the curtailed lives of the children lying in them.

Hundreds of mourners paused at the shiny biers of Lindsay and Jordan Walker on Sunday during the public wake for the two children who were found strangled and suffocated at their father's apartment Feb. 17. Many sobbed audibly in front of the peaceful-looking siblings in the Roselawn Chapel at the Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home.

Family members greeted mourners on both sides of the white caskets. The long line of anguished adults and children included family, neighbors, friends, teachers and fellow students of both children, who attended Kennedy Elementary School, and co-workers and students from Lincoln Elementary, where their mother, Karen Walker, is employed.

Neither parent could attend the children's wake - Karen Walker, 34, remains hospitalized from stab wounds and Michael Walker, 38, is in the Dubuque County Jail on a $1.5 million bond. Police have accused Michael Walker of murdering his children and stabbing his estranged wife Feb. 17.

Lindsay, 9, was flanked by her clarinet and a favorite doll, with a large bouquet of pink and white flowers nearby. She would have turned 10 Wednesday. Next to Jordan, 8, were his baseball glove and an Asbury (Iowa) Cardinals Little League baseball jersey. His skateboard and baseball bat were underneath the bier. An arrangement of purple flowers stood near his casket. Jordan's 9th birthday would have been today. Between the two small caskets was a basket of paper flowers, each bearing the name of a fellow student.

Most poignant were the children's school photo frames. Each display had a small frame to hold a school photo from each school year. Lindsay's student pictures were carefully mounted for grades one through four and Jordan's first through third grade school picture slots were filled. The rest of the miniature frames were empty.

Mourners were touched by different things Sunday. Some were weeping as they entered the chapel, others broke down while they hugged and spoke with family members and others kept their composure until they saw the children or those favorite things. Few left the wake dry-eyed.

Among the mourners were many children who came to say goodbye to their friends, classmates and teammates. Tearful mothers often hugged their own children tightly as they left the chapel.

The family will have a private funeral later when Karen Walker is able to attend. The children will be buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
