DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Paul J. Schramm, 80, of Dyersville, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Mark Schramm officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 6 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1923, in Freeport, Ill., son of Joseph and Catherine (Fisher) Schramm. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from Aquin High School, class of 1941, in Freeport.

He married Mary Jeanne Voels on June 12, 1948, in Dubuque. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Loras College in that same year.

He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific, and was in the China Sea as the war ended.

He was an educator, serving Blairstown from 1948 -1951, Des Moines Dowling from 1951 -1955, Xavier High School from 1955 -1966, and finally at Western Dubuque School System from 1966 - 1986 as a teacher and coach. He earned his Masters Degree from the University of Iowa in 1971.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jeanne; five sons, Father Mark Schramm, SVD, of Chicago, Paul (Suzanne) Schramm, of Dyersville, Roger (Deborah) Schramm and Michael Schramm both of San Diego, and David (Debbie) Schramm, of Edmund, Okla.; two daughters, Mary (Pat) Guinane, of Bloomington, Ill., and Patty McCauley (and fiancé, Ken Berzinski), of Marion; seven grandchildren, Joe, Tim, Andy, Ryan and Kalynn Schramm, Brittany McCauley and Chase Stuart; a twin sister, Pauline (John) Herron, of Davis, Ill.; two brothers, Alphonse (Nora) Schramm, of Dubuque, and Ed (Lorraine) Schramm, of Freeport; and a special niece, Mary Ann Keehner, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Louis Schramm.

A Paul J. Schramm Memorial Fund has been established.
