John B. Holmberg

HAZEL GREEN, Wis. -- John B. Holmberg, 89, of 1169 Bluff Road, Hazel Green, died at 9:20 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at Immaculate Conception Church, Kieler, with the Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by members of Reimenapp-Averkamp-Stelpflug Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6455, of Dickeyville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 N., East Dubuque, Ill., where the parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Friends also may call after

9 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Parish Center.

He was born on June 7, 1920, in Dubuque, son of William and Mary (Sullivan) Holmberg. He married Lucille E. Stohlmeyer, of Tennyson, on June 10, 1947, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Tennyson; she preceded him in death on July 2, 2006.

He was employed at A. Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. in Dubuque prior to entering the service, where he served in the Army Air Force 86th Fighter Bomber Group in the U. S., North Africa, Sicily, Corsica, Italy, France, Germany and England. Upon his return to Dubuque, he was employed by the railway mail for two years and then as a letter carrier for the postal service from 1947 to 1983. He also farmed in rural Hazel Green.

John was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are a daughter, Joan (Lyle) Kaarle, of Phoenix; four sons, David, of Chicago, Michael (Vickie), of Dubuque, Loras, of Plymouth, Minn., and John Patrick (Christen), of Hong Kong; three grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Willis, of Farley, Iowa, Rita Holmberg, of Dubuque, and Mary Walsh, of Bridgeport, Conn.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Loras and William; and a daughter-in-law, Ana.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Parish in Kieler.
