PEOSTA, Iowa - Fr. Joseph Knapp, OCSO, 86, of New Melleray Abbey, Peosta, died at 8:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at New Melleray Abbey.

Services will be at 7 a.m. Tuesday at New Melleray Abbey Chapel, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in New Melleray Abbey Cemetery. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1916, in Trempeleau, Wis., son of William and Emma (Schildgen) Knapp. Fr. Joseph was baptized Giles Norris Knapp and was one of 10 children.

He entered New Melleray Abbey on Feb. 10, 1941, and received the religious habit on March 30, 1941. He made his solemn profession of religious vows on April 21, 1946, and was ordained a priest on Sept. 5, 1948.

Surviving are five brothers and sisters, Ivo Knapp, Ruth (Knapp) Kerbawy, Mary Louise (Knapp) Cunningham, Emma (Knapp) Sullivan and Sr. Patricia Knapp.

Memorials may be given to New Melleray Abbey, 6500 Melleray Circle, Peosta, Iowa 52068.
