DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Walter D. Link, 86, of 2418 Second Ave. SE, Dyersville, died at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Dyersville American Legion and the New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Walter's body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes. The Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1916, in Dyersville, son of Martin and Genevieve (Meis) Link. He married Virginia Jaeger on July 12, 1937, in Dubuque.

He received his education in the Seattle schools. He was a World War II Navy veteran, having served in the Armed Guard.

He was a truck driver for Link Truck Line prior to and after serving in the Navy. He then farmed in the rural Dyersville area. Later, he was employed as a foreman at the former Dubuque Packing Co. In 1969, Walter and his wife built a golf course, Link's Rolling Knolls, which he operated until his retirement.

He was a member of the Dyersville American Legion Post 137 and the New Vienna VFW Post 7736. He also was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, always looking forward to attending Mass each week.

He had many hobbies including golfing, woodworking, gardening, feeding the birds and playing cards. He enjoyed being entertained by Virginia's piano students.

He took great pride in spending time with his devoted wife, children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Link, of Dyersville; four children, Genevieve Naderman, of Aurora, Colo., Beverly (Jack) Beacom, of Fresno, Calif., Sheila (Tim) Murphy, of Caledonia, Minn., and Walter (Kathleen) Link, of Dyersville; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Rebecca Link; a son-in-law, Bob Nadermann; a brother, Herb Link; and a sister, Jeanette Link.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph's Parish, Farley.
