Walter A. Young, 87, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 160 N. Algona, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at the care center.

Memorial services will be at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church at a later date. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Young worked as a bus driver for the city of Los Angeles, for 36 years. He retired to Dubuque in 1978.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1916, in New Orleans, son of Walter and Odette (Raymond) Young. He married Lorraine Link on July 1, 1940, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He was in the Marines during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

Walter participated as a post mortem anatomical donor to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for the purpose of Alzheimer's disease research.

Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; two sons: Leo (Jan) Young, of North Liberty, Iowa, and Thomas (Mary) Young, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Barbara Young, of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Yvonne Rickoll, of New Orleans; grandchildren, Robert, Shawn, Shelly, Jennifer and Lucas; and two step grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Symask.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ludie and Eloise; and a brother, Roy.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Dubuque Chapter.

The family wishes to thank the Stonehill caregivers for the love and attention extended to Walter.
