Donald E. "Don" Steil, 63, of 10837 Idaho St., died at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m., and the members of the Key West Fire Department will meet at 7 p.m.

Mr. Steil worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years as a machinist, until his retirement. After he retired, he worked for the Diamond Jo Casino.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Edward J. and Evelyn (Schadler) Steil. He married Beverly Brown on Nov. 29, 1958, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque.

He was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94 and a former member of the Key West Fire Department, where he was a medical first responder and a Certified Firefighter I. Don also loved to volunteer at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly; four daughters, Teri (William) Burdt, Patricia O'Toole, Judith (Jeff) Faulhaber and Katherine Steil, all of Dubuque; a son, Daniel Steil, of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Josh, Kyle, Dylan and Colin; and a sister, Elaine Owens, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be given to the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and Hospice of Dubuque.
