Clement J. "Jim" Koppes

Clement J. "Jim" Koppes, 77, of 2113 Washington St., died 7:06 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, of natural causes.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1931, in Cascade; son of Clement and Mary Lucille (Hayes) Koppes. He was a graduate of the Loras Academy.

Jim served in the Army during the Korean conflict in Korea.

He married Mary Lucille "Lucy" Nicks on June 11, 1955, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Jim worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. and FDL Foods, until his retirement.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dubuque and Chapter 5 700 Club.

Jim enjoyed bowling, fishing and vegetable gardening. He also enjoyed playing cribbage with his sons and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille "Lucy" Koppes, of Dubuque; five children, Liane M. (Walter) Schmidt Harrison, John "Cowboy" (Rhonda) Koppes, Alan J. (Elizabeth) Koppes, Duane "Duey" Koppes and Jolene B. (James) Fransen, all of Dubuque; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; his mother, Lucille Frost, of Dubuque; 4 sisters, Mary Agnes Miller, of Albuquerque, N.M., Vivian (Ralph) Cremer, Donna Lucas and Judy (Jim) Lang, all of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Robert Frost; a grandson, James Robert Koppes; and two brothers, John Joseph Koppes, in infancy, and Robert (Susan) Koppes

A Clement J. Koppes Memorial Fund has been established.
