Helen E. Heiberger

Helen Elizabeth (Burds) Heiberger, 82, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Phoenix.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road.

She was born on March 15, 1927, in Peosta, Iowa, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Breitbach) Burds. She married Edward F. Heiberger on Jan. 28, 1950, in Dubuque.

Prior to her marriage to Ed, Helen attended Clarke College and taught elementary education in Peosta.

For many years, Helen, along with Ed, prepared taxes in their home and enjoyed their many clients who became friends over the years. After raising their children, Helen returned to working outside their home in 1979 at Mulgrew Oil Co. She retired in 1992. After retirement, she worked at Marting's Shoe Store on a part-time basis.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish.

Helen found happiness in watching her children and grandchildren find their own life passions. She was always there to support and praise them in success or defeat. She cherished time spent with Ed, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed games, travel and visits with friends and neighbors. She will be missed.

Those left to honor her memory are her husband, Ed, of Dubuque; five children, Gail Heiberger, of Gilbert, Ariz., Blake (Leslee) Heiberger, of Hennipen, Ill., Steve (Jeannie) Heiberger, of Dubuque, Dave (Kathy) Heiberger, of Phoenix, and Don Heiberger, of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Heath (Jessica) Heiberger, of Peru, Ill., Haley Anderson, of Hennipen, Martha Heiberger, of Chicago, Meredith (Steve) Halverson, Joseph (fiancee, Ashley Johnson) Heiberger and Jonathan Heiberger, all of Dubuque, Breanna and Billy Heiberger, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Brian and Kelly Heiberger, of Phoenix; 2 great-grandchildren, Liam Halverson, of Dubuque, and Chloe Anderson, of Hennipen; and two brothers, Jeff Burds, of Peosta, and Martin (Celeste) Burds, of Madison, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Lou Burds; and four brothers, Al, Bill, Dave and Ed Burds.

In lieu of flowers, a Helen E. Heiberger Memorial Fund has been established.
