Irwin H. Bach

Irwin H. Bach, 87, of the Iowa Veteran's Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of 2420 Queen St., died at 5:55 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at the veteran's home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Dubuque Post 6.

He was born on March 30, 1921, in Dubuque, son of William Francis and Caroline M. "Carrie" (Weiland) Bach. Irv attended Sacred Heart School in Dubuque.

His first job was a truck driver for the city coal company. He delivered coal to many houses in the Dubuque area.

He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas and at Camp Roberts in California. He served as a radio operator, munitions handler and in the artillery. After being medically discharged in 1944, Irv went to work at the Dubuque Battery Factory. He later furthered his career and became a foreman at the Dubuque Stone Products Quarry north of Dubuque. He was assigned new duties as the overseer for the rock crusher machine until he retired in 1980.

After retirement, Irv spent every fall in Montana, visiting his brother Bill. They liked to hunt elk, deer and antelope. They also fished at the Martinsdale Montana Lake. While living in Dubuque, he enjoyed visiting with his brothers, Bill and Oliver, at their sister Caroline's house to play cards.

Irv liked to work with his hands. He enjoyed woodworking and working on his trucks. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives throughout the Dubuque area.

He was a member of the American Legion Dubuque Post 6 and the Teamsters Union Local 421 in Dubuque.

Surviving are two sisters, Caroline M. Bach Drumm Kennicker Welsh, of Dubuque, and Vivian D. "Dolly" Bach Brown Snyder, of Dubuque; nieces and nephews, Lynn (friend, Ted Roepsch) Gilbreath, Karl (Jacqueline) Kennicker, Rox (Gerald) Kressig, Robin M. Kennicker, William, Paul and Joey Brown, Vivian Fluhr, Betty (the late Bill) Biehl, Pam Bach, Paula (Robert) Lange, Maureen (Mark) Mosse and Deb Justman; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Bach (special friend, Mabel Barnett), Eldon (Mary) Bach, Oliver "Ben" Bach (special friend, Jinny Schmalz) and Delbert Bach; grandparents, Martin (Jeanette VanHaldren) Bach and Herman (Margaret Specht) Weiland; great-grandparents, Albert John (Hendricka Teisen) VanHaldren, Phillip (Christina Miller) Weiland, and Martin (Eva Keneering) Specht; brothers-in-law, Peter W. Drumm, Robert Kennicker, Melvin Welsh and Norman Brown; nephew, Kelvin J. Kennicker; nephew-in-law, Larry Gilbreath; and great-great-niece, Taylor (Downey) Neyen.

In lieu of flowers, an Irwin H. Bach Memorial Fund has been established.
