Mrs. Edward F. (Ethel M.) Winter, 92, of the Ennoble Manor Care Center died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1993 at Ennoble Manor. Ethel Winter was the daughter of Fred and Helen Schmidt. Ethel was raised by her grandparents, Fred and Catherine Schmidt. Ethel married Edward Winter in Dec 1919. Ethel Winter was formerly of 775 Rose St., where she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Pat (Nan) Connolly 1973 to May 1988. She was Dubuque's first Gold Star Mother of WWII; the Gerald F. Winter VFW Post was named after her son, who was the firtst Dubuquer to lose his life in WWII in the June 1942 bombing of England. Services were held at Nativity Catholic Church and Behr Funeral Home, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. She was survived by a son, Harold Winter of Walker, MN, two daughters, Eunice (Delbert) Schultz of Parachute, CO, and Nan (PAT) Connolly of Dubuque, IA, and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
