August A. Koester 1870 - 1944

August A. Koester, 74, a retired cabinet maker, of 1638(sic) White Street, died at Mercy Hospital Sunday evening at 9 o'clock after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held from the Strueber Funeral Home to St. Mary's Church Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Born April 9, 1870, in Steinheilm, Germany, he came to Dubuque 53 years ago and worked at his trade of cabinet maker until 1932, when he retired. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Hemmi October 29, 1895, in Sacred Heart Church by the late Father Bauman. A Catholic, he was a member of St. Mary's church and the church choir. He also was a member of the St. Aloysius Society and the Holy Name Society. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Al (Hilda) Schmitt, Mrs. Dick (Helen) DuCray, and Miss Marie Koester, all of Dubuque; Mrs. Al (Clara) Groppe, Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Al (Pauline) Weis, Decorah, Ia.; two sons, Joseph A. Koester, Dubuque, and Leo A. Koester, Des Moines; three brothers; Chris Koester, Dubuque, and John and William Koester, Germany; two sisters, Mary and Anna, both in Germany; and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, who died September 10, 1931.

Mary Hemmi was the daughter of Christian Hemmi & Maria Ursula Patscheider (spelling variations). Pallbearers were Leo Koester, Alfred Schmitt, Jr., George Schmitt, Donald Rellihan, Sergeant Carl Koenig, and Harold Kutsch. Attending the funeral from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Koester and son, Leo, Jr., DesMoines, Ia.; Mrs. Albert Groppe, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Al Weis, Shirley and Jeanenne Weis, James and Thomas Weis, all of Decorah; Alfred Palen, Chicago, Ill.; and Sgt. Carl Koenig, of Ft Sam Houston, Tex.
