Mrs. Andrew E. (Evelyn M.) Bodnar Jr., 75, of 2442 Cherry St., died at 5:35 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at home, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be the parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mrs. Bodnar was a physical education teacher for the parochial school system in Dubuque.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1927, in Huron, S.D., daughter of Donald J. and Emma (Collins) Harris.

Evie was a graduate of McMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill., with a degree in physical education.

She married Andrew E. Bodnar Jr. on Oct. 14, 1950, in Vinton, Iowa; he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2000. She had supported the Dubuque community in a variety of ways since she and her husband, Andrew, moved to Dubuque in 1953.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and the St. Elizabeth's Mothers Club. Evie was a very active volunteer for a number of groups including Citizens Advisory board member of the Department of Correctional Services; the Retired Teachers Association, volunteer driver for the Wendt Regional Cancer Center for five years; Wahlert Bingo volunteer, for which she received the Crystal Award for Service; Project Concern food give away volunteer; and Operation New View fund raisers with Sr. Janaan Hickey, OSF.

Evie's philosophy was to "join and go"- Evie was a member of the Swing Club and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed playing Bingo and being with her many friends. "There's no point in doing anything if you're not enjoying it," Evie said. She especially enjoyed her pets, Walter, Cheebe and Leo.

Surviving are five daughters, Susan B. (Dennis) Houlihan, Joan E. (David) Noon, Ann M. (Dave) Donovan and Patricia M. "Patty" Bodnar, all of Dubuque, and Carol A. (Robert) Burgmeier, of LeCrescent, Minn.; three sons, James A. (Nancy) Bodnar and Thomas E. (Lisa) Bodnar, both of Dubuque, and Joseph J. (Rosemary) Bodnar, of La Crosse, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Brendan and John Houlihan, Elizabeth Noon, Leah and Lucas Burgmeier, April and Jeannie Neuman and Ryan and Eric Fagan; and a sister, Donna Jean Terepka, of Scottsville, N.Y.

Memorials may be given to the Maria House, 1561 Jackson St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001 and to the Dubuque Humane Society, 175 Menard Court, Dubuque, Iowa 52003.
