John S. Byrnes, aged 64 years, died at his residence on West Seventeenth street on Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock, of cancer of the stomach. Mr. Byrnes came to Dubuque when a boy 9 years of age and has resided here and in this vicinity ever since. His mother’s last husband was James Smith, who will be remembered by all of the early settlers. He came to Dubuque in 1832 and was a soldier in the war of 1812 and in the Black Hawk war, and received bounty and land for such services. Mr. Byrnes was a worth, intelligent man and was highly esteemed by all of his acquaintances and his loss will be deeply regretted. He resided for several years on a valuable farm in White Water Township, where he officiated as a justice of the peace. Mr. Byrnes’ wife was the daughter of Thos. McCraney and was the first white child born in what is now Iowa and is still a resident of our city. His remains will be taken for burial tomorrow morning a 7 o’clock on the narrow guage railway. Mr. Byrnes leaves the following children; Margaret Gibbon, Henry Byrnes, Blanche Rattigan, Frederick Byrnes, Charles Byrnes, Ralph, Zadie, Frank and Orlando Byrnes. His mother died on the 31st day of January last at the advance age of 92 at his residence. He followed quickly to the grave the mother who was so dear to him and whom he so well cared and provided for ever since the death of her last husband.
