Death of an Early Settler

Mrs. Eliza Smith, one of the early settlers of Dubuque, died yesterday at the residence of her son, Mr. John S. Byrnes, aged 92 years. The following passed by the Early Settlers Association yesterday, gives her history. Whereas, under the will of Divine Province, Mrs. Eliza Smith, widow of Captain James Smith, deceased, hath passed from life. Resolved that we look upon and refer to her past history with great pleasure. She died at the advanced age 92 at the residence of her son John S. Byrnes Esq., in this city. She came to Dubuque from Galena in the year 1833 and has resided here and in this county ever since. Her husband was in the war of 1812 and in the Black Hawk war, and received grants of land for worthy service therein and Mrs. Smith when she died was a pensioner of the Government. She was a well informed lady, of amicable disposition, and all this life a sincere Christian, a loving mother and true friend. Resolved, That with much pleasure we make this record of her life and character, while at the same time we express out great regret at our loss and our condolence with her family and friends.
Eliza Byrnes removed from Louisville, KY about 1824 with her son John S. Byrnes to Galena, IL as a widow. She married Capt. James Smith, also a widower on 4/21828 , John Connelly at Galena, IL officiated. James Smith died 10/23/1856 according to Eliz request for pension 3/27/1878
