Helen V. Powers, 78, of 1285 Cleveland Ave., died Friday, March 21, 2008, at home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to
8 p.m. Monday at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary service at 6 p.m.
She was born on April 15, 1929, in Dubuque, daughter of Joseph and Louise (Richter) Nelson. She graduated from St. Columbkille High School, where she was co-captain on the girls basketball team.
She married Milton Powers on July 22, 1950, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on March 10, 1978.
Helen was the last charter member of the Dubuque Eagles Club 568. For 58 years, she stayed active in the club, serving as auxiliary state president from 1992 to 1993 and also was a member of its REAC.
Helen was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed bowling, bird watching, board games and playing cards. She especially enjoyed playing rummy royal once a month with her high school friends. She retired from Mount Carmel in 1992.
Surviving are her children, John (Ann) Powers, Jeff (Ronda) Powers, Jeanne (Ed) Lester, Judy (Chuck) Stokes, Joe (Carol) Powers, Jim Powers and Jerry (Sandy) Powers, all of Dubuque; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Alice Koester and Margaret Kolfenbach.
