Gerald E. Bakey

Gerald E. "Jerry" Bakey, 68, of 1512 Southern Ave., died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at St. Columbkilles Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, with military rites accorded by Dubuque Detachment of the Marine Corp. League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1940, in Dubuque, son of James E. and Bernice (Cavanaugh) Bakey. He graduated from Peosta High School. He married Juanita Marie Callahan on Nov. 14, 1964, at St. Raphael Cathedral.

Jerry served for the Marine Corp. from 1960 to 1964.

He worked for the former Dubuque Packing Company for 23 years, and then he worked for River City Realty for the last 12 years.

He was a member of the Dubuque Board of Realtors and a former member of the UFCW Local 150A.

Jerry enjoyed his summers at Freddy's Beach in Delhi, Iowa, for over 30 years, especially sitting around the fire ring, working in the yard, being outdoors and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita; three children, Rhonda (Virgil) Weber, of Bernard, Keith (Tammy) Bakey, of Dubuque and Mike (Stacey) Bakey, of Key West, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Kaleena, Brenden, Caleb, Blake, Ryleigh, Jacob, Hannah and Hallee; two sisters, Carol (Gary) Smith, of Dubuque and Mary (Mike) Breen, of East Dubuque; three brothers, Dick (Keiko) Bakey, of Dubuque, Gene (Kay) Bakey, of Delhi and John (Ruth) Bakey, of East Dubuque; and brothers and sisters -in-law, Mark Beckman, Elaine Gansen, Dan "Buck" and Barb Callahan, Donnie "Jeep" and Marilyn Callahan, Becky and Terry Lyons, and Debbie Callahan and Alvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Darlene Beckman; and a sister-in-law, Kay Reardon.
