SHERRILL, Iowa -- Edna L. Koltes, 98, of Dubuque Nursing & Rehab Center, formerly of Sherrill, died peacefully at 6:53 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Sherrill. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at the funeral home.

She was born on May 20, 1909, in Sherrill, daughter of Louis and Freda (Loanjers) Spoerl.

Edna attended the one room Bloody Run School.

She married Henry Wehrspann, he preceded her in death in September of 1959. She later married Charles Koltes on Jan. 21, 1961, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Sherrill; he also preceded her in death in 1984. Edna and her husbands farmed in the Sherrill area for many years. She moved to Dubuque in 1985.

Edna was an avid card player and enjoyed visiting with people. She fed the birds and squirrels everyday. They felt so comfortable with her they would eat out of her hand. Her dog, Spotty, was her constant companion.

Surviving are two brothers, Edwin Spoerl, of Dubuque, and Arnold (Joyce) Spoerl, of Sherrill; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Marcella (Herbert) Koltes, Mrs. Marcella (Larry) Jaeger and Albertha Lahey, all of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews, including nephews, William "Bill" and Janet Spoerl, and Gary and Mary Ann Koltes, all of Dubuque, who cared for Edna.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mildred Spoerl; and a brother, Walter Spoerl.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and the Rev. Melissa Warren Spoerl for their care and concern for Edna.
