James C. Welu

James C. "Jim" Welu, 81, of 2225 Woodlawn St., died Friday, March 7, 2008, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Dubuque Marine Corp League. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where a scripture service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

He was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Raymond and Marie (Fluhr) Welu.

He attended Loras Academy and graduated from Loras College in 1950. He married Jacqueline Hubler on Sept. 12, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Jim was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. Jim was a foreman at the former Dubuque Packing Company for 38 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a charter member of Resurrection Parish and also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 510.

Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline; his family, Wendy (Syl) Connolly, Lori (Rick) Trausch, and their daughters, Shanna and Samantha, Julie Welu, and her daughter, Elizabeth, Tracey (Matt) O'Connor, and their sons, Liam and Seamus, of Hopkinton, Iowa, Ann (Jeff) Thompson, and their sons, Asa and Shane, of Hastings, Minn., Eric Welu, and his children, Jacob and Gabbi, Chad Welu (fiancee, Amy Shepherd), and her daughter, Mikki; two brothers, Bill Welu and T.J. (Carole) Welu; two sisters, Marym Danzer and Adele Palmer; two sisters-in-law, Dottie Welu Breitbach and Jean Welu.

He was preceded in death by his brothers; Jack Welu and Bob Welu.

The family wish to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Dubuque Internal Medicine, Drs. Garrett Ridgley and Mark Hermann, and the nurses and staff at Finley Hospital, especially 5th floor.
