Eleanor V. Wickre

Eleanor Virginia Wickre, 86, of Heritage Manor Apartments, formerly of 2820 Burden St., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 3. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. The Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1922, in Corson, S.D., daughter of Earl and Caroline (Beiningen) Christopherson. She married Julian Sater Wickre on Oct. 26, 1941, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Luverne, Minn., by the Rev. M.C. Helland; he preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1999.

She was a 1939 graduate of Brandon High School and a 1940 graduate of Nettleton Commercial College.

Eleanor was a CNA at Lady of Lourdes and Dubuque Healthcare. She retired in 1992.

She was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church until it closed. Eleanor then attended St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Eleanor devoted her life to her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and children, sewing, crosswords and baking. Eleanor was very talented in music, especially the piano. She had a great sense of humor and vivid storytelling abilities about her earlier years growing up in South Dakota.

Surviving are three daughters, Shirley (Charlie) Brown, of Georgia, Jayne (Mark) Schonhoff and Jackie Wickre, both of Dubuque; three sons, Gary (Becky) Wickre, of Belvedere, Ill., Daryl (Rosemary) Wickre and Jeff (Julie) Wickre, both of Dubuque; a sister, Eunice (Walter) Mueller, of Tea, S.D.; 13 grandchildren, Susan, Annette, Tom, Christi, Bethany, Tammy, Cindy, Jeremiah, Olivia, Terry, Samuel, Josie and Joshua; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tommy; and an infant grandson, Olds.

The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Heritage Manor, especially Penny, and her special drivers Jayne and Jackie.
