Robert J. Knockel

Robert J. Knockel, 86, of 2249 Elm St., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 3, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Knockel worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 41 years as a meat cutter

He was born on April 12, 1921, in St. Catherine, son of John and Mary (Ries) Knockel.

He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II and was a member of Amvets Post 3.

Surviving are his children, Nancy (Dale) Reuter, of Peosta, Iowa, Beverly Knockel, and John Knockel, both of Dubuque, and Gary (Joan) Knockel, of Gurnee, Ill.; grandchildren, Liberty (Mike) Fulks-Tupper and Andrew (Deb) Fulks; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Della Saffran, Delores Noel, Mary Lou Breitbach and Donna (Robert) Westmeyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Jr.; wife, Rita Kane Knockel; three brothers, John, Ralph and Paul; and a sister, Lenore Leytem.

The family wishes to thank Heritage Manor, Mercy Medical Center, especially the 4 West staff, and to Dr. Honorio Caceres and Dr. Ramabadran, for all their loving care they gave to Robert.
