George W. Vinton

George W. Vinton, 83, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Dubuque, died at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at his home under the care of Hernando-Pasco Hospice.

Services were held at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. The Dobies Funeral Home, 701 Tarpon Springs Ave., Tarpon, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1924, in Chicago, son of Frances and George Vinton.

He served as a pilot in the Air Force during World War II. He retired as an industrial engineer from Unisys Corporation.

George met his bride Vivian Conlon and they were married in 1949 at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque. In 1979, George and Vivian moved from St. Paul, Minn., to Palm Harbor, Fla.

George was a graduate of Loras College class of 1950. He played varsity basketball and was well known as "stocky legs."

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Vivian; daughter, Barbara Vinton; son, George (Hedi) Vinton; a grandson, Christopher Vinton; nephews and nieces of the Conlon family, Klauer family and Murphy family; cousins, Loretta Meyers and family and June Meyers, of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an aunt, Marge Meyer.
