James C. Manning

James C. Manning, 86, of Dubuque, died on Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Trinity Regional Health System, Rock Island, Ill.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Manning worked for Business Supply Co. for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1986.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1921, in Lafayette Township, Iowa, son of Thomas J. and Minnie (Wagner) Manning. He married Dorothy Hannan in 1940; she preceded him in death in 1950. He then married Alice (Friedli) Jerrett in 1952.

He served in the Army during World War II in the 44th Field Artillery Division and served in the European Theater including the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of the Eagles Club and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 9663 and also was an avid bowler. His bowling accomplishments
included a 299 and a 300 game. He was the high average bowler for Dubuque in 1957 and a member of the 700 Bowling Club.

Surviving are his wife Alice; his children, Jaimus Montress, of Chicago, Terrance Manning, of Dubuque, Cathy (James) White and Gary (Donna) Jerrett, both of Bettendorf, Iowa, Paul (Liz) Jerrett, of West Virginia; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Jerrett, of New Jersey; grandchildren, Tim Manning, Monica Salwolke, Beth Ann Beaves, Suzanne Krug, Grant Manning, Alex White, Sue Jerrett, Karen Dougherty, Michelle DeMars, Daniel Jerrett, Ethan Jerrett, Amanda Jerrett, Mark White, Susan Tesar, Eric White; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Fisch, of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Lina (Sye) Schmoekel.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Manning; a son, Allen Jerrett; a daughter-in-law, June Manning; a grandson, Allen Jerrett Jr.; a brother, Henry; and sisters, Ethel, and Rita.
