Howard D. Schroeder, 83, of 2375 Roosevelt St., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Private services will be held on Monday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Schroeder was employed in the maintenance department at the former Dubuque Packing Co. from 1942 to 1980.

He was born on July 12, 1924, in Dubuque, son of Edward and Loretta (Ernsdorff) Schroeder. He married Betty Lions on June 8, 1946, at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque.

He was a likeable, happy, fun-loving person who enjoyed fixing things and working with his hands.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betty; a brother, Richard Schroeder and a sister-in-law, Lucille Schroeder, both of Dubuque; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Wendell, Willard, Lowell, and Alfred; and a sister, Ruth.
