Reynold F. Foell

BALLTOWN, Iowa -- Reynold F. Foell, 90, of Stephenson Nursing Center, 2956 S. Walnut Road, formerly of 24037 Creek Valley Road, Balltown, died peacefully at 6:18 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday St. Francis Church, Balltown, with the Rev. Ray Burkle officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Balltown, where military rites will be accorded by the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 7736 of New Vienna. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on July 4, 1917, in Sherrill, son of Frank and Anna (Schoendorff) Foell. He married Agatha "Aggie" Mergen on Nov. 27, 1945, at St. Francis Church in Balltown; she preceded him in death on March 5, 2006. They farmed in Balltown for many years until their retirement.

He served in the Army during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He fought at the invasion of Normandy Beach. Reynold was present for General Patton's speech.

Reynold was a member of St. Francis Church in Balltown and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 508 of Dubuque.

He enjoyed watching wrestling and loved flowers. Reynold will be remembered as a "very good listener."

Surviving are his children, Mary J. (Ray) Engling and Don R. (Rita Wand) Foell , both of Freeport, Ill., and Joyce Ann (Ron) Miller, of Davenport; five grandchildren; Terry (Terese) Engling, of Indianapolis, Ind. Cheri (Dennis) Kerchner, of Freeport, Ill., Amy (Jeff) Goecks, of New Glarus, Wis., Joe (Brenda) Foell, of Evansville, Wis., and Mary Ann Essary, of Davenport; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; a sister, Darlene Link, of Sherrill; and a special niece, Sharon Rose Miller, of Dubuque, and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Rick Engling; three great-grandchildren, Rachel Engling, Andrew Engling and Nicholas Essary; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Link.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Stephenson Nursing Center and the nurses at 4 East and the Emergency Room at Freeport Memorial Hospital.
