SHERRILL, Iowa -- Louis F. Birkel, 86, of 12791 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on May 3, 1921, in Specht's Ferry, son of Ferdinand and Cecelia (Motsch) Birkel. He farmed in Specht's Ferry his

entire life, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish.

Surviving are a sister, Viola Engler, of Dubuque; a brother, Herman (Mary Lou) Birkel, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, James Hird, of Dubuque; a special friend, Jane Ferrand, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 sisters.
