Earl A. Hayes

Earl A. "Bud" Hayes, 75, of 3485 Windsor Ave., formerly of 2545 Anamosa Drive, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6.

Mr. Hayes worked as a Hydro Tester for Watubo-Tek Inc. for 26 years until his retirement in 1996.

He was born on April 26, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Carl and Marion (Skahill) Hayes. He married Jean M. Heller on April 24, 1954, at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 2005.

Bud served in the Army during the Korean conflict in Austria.

He was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Key West, and taught CCD there for many years. Bud was a foster grandparent at the school. He was also a member of the Community of the Living Word and the Eagles Club.

Bud and Jean enjoyed camping and traveling, especially by train. In his earlier years, Bud liked to go bowling and to play his guitar. Bud and Jean also enjoyed going to garage sales and then to lunch together.

Surviving are his daughters, Rose M. Cashman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sue M. Hayes, of Whitesville, W. Va., and Cindy M. (Nancy Bergthold) Hayes and Ann M. (Todd) Jaeger, both of Mountain Home, Ark.; sons, Rick A. Hayes, Harry A. (Karen) Hayes and Dale A. Hayes, all of Dubuque, and Dan A. (Anne) Hayes, of Pecatonica, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores (Don) Wiederholt, of Dubuque; and brothers, Ronald J. (Shirley) Hayes, of Plaistow, N.H., and Thomas M. (Suzanne) Hayes, of Hastings, Mich.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and two children in infancy.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Edna, Am, Megan and Melissa and the nurses and staff of Stonehill Care Center for their loving, supportive care of Bud that improved his quality of life.
